Overall, the violence in Ulster following partition, a bloody front in the Anglo-Irish War, was almost as much against Protestants as Catholics; 157 Protestants died in the two years up to July 1922, and 37 members of the security forces, compared to 257 Catholics. But the orgy of violence in 1922, which followed the treaty between Britain and elements of the Sinn Féin leadership, proved much more one-sided; Catholics were battered into submission. More people died in Belfast during three months of violence in 1922 than in the whole two years following the formation of the state.
