Although economic impact studies are potentially useful in that they quantify the exact contribution of museums to the economy, they are open to abuse and prone to extravagant claims based on questionable methodological grounds. Although the claims of such studies cannot be ignored, they do need to be carefully analysed to ensure that the conclusions drawn from them are substantiated.
