The environment has been a feature of economic and social thinking for a long time, but it has been in a subordinate position. Both sociology and economics viewed the environment as ”a given context” in which sociological and economic activities unfolded. Sociology regarded this ”context” as a neutral factor with no influence on social practices and structures.
