If your machine has this option, and a pair of twin needles came with it, here’s your chance to try it out. If not, the next best thing is two rows of straight stretch-stitch. If your machine won’t do a stretch stitch either, use a straight stitch and stretch the fabric slightly while you stitch. This will make the stitches loose enough that they won’t pop the first time the fabric stretches. Don’t overdo it, or you’ll end up with a ruffle where your hem should be. qxd 4/13/04 10:40 AM Page 45 C H A P T E R 4 : B A S I C M E N D I N G A N D A LT E R I N G Popped Seams A seam that’s opened up with no damage to the cloth itself can simply be stitched up the way it was.

Cotton and linen both might shrink slightly the first time they are washed. Wash the fabric in the way you plan to wash the project when it is finished. Clipping the corners of the fabric through the selvage seems to keep new fabric from fraying quite as much. After it’s washed, cut away the worst of the tangled threads and shake the fabric out before putting it in the dryer, so it won’t wrinkle as badly. To prevent fraying entirely, zigzag-stitch along the cut ends of your fabric. Hand wash-only and dry clean-only fabrics don’t need to be laundered before sewing.

Gingham has a checked pattern created by weaving colored and white yarns together. Chambray and denim are woven of colored warp threads and white weft threads. Chambray is a light- to medium-weight plain-weave fabric used often for shirts, while the heavier denim is a twill-weave fabric used for jeans and jackets. Seersucker alternates tightly woven stripes with more loosely woven ones. This makes the fabric crinkly. It is often a lightweight fabric ideal for summer wear. qxd 4/13/04 10:40 AM Page 31 C H A P T E R 3 : FA B R I C FA C T S Cotton flannel has one fuzzy side, which makes it a napped fabric.
