I recall visiting the old Johnson place in the summer of 1980, only days before it was to be bulldozed to make way for some new condos. The place had been abandoned since 1975 when Jim Johnson died, and it stuck out like a sore thumb in the middle of what was now suburbia. I made my way through the hip-high weeds to the old dilapidated round pen, climbed to the top board, and sat down. I gazed past the combination of weeds and alfalfa plants that had somehow managed to grow inside the pen, to the old power pole that still stood in the middle.
For the next several minutes we watched as more of the same happened. " I was referring to what appeared to me to be a bad attitude. The old man took the last drag from his cigarette and dropped it on the ground. "He sure does," he said, mashing the butt with the toe of his boot and leaning against the arena rail. " Apparently the old man was seeing something that I wasn't, but not wanting to look like a fool I nodded my head knowingly in agreement. "Maybe we can get him bought before this guy ruins him completely," he said, climbing over the top rail of the arena.
So this book is a labor of love for me, just as it is for Mark. If between us, we can cause even one horse owner to get to know his horse better and give them both a better life, then this project has been worth all the effort it took to put it together. I'm proud to be asked to participate in my good buddy's effort and hope that my pictures truly convey his meaning to readers. If everyone who reads this book enjoys it as much as I have, we won't be able to print enough of them.
