ART THERAPY? COMMUNITY ARTS? ARTS EDUCATION? This was a very exciting time for me. I had a high public profile in local art colleges, and I felt validated for the first time after many years of struggle. However, these projects drew me away from the core function of providing therapeutic support for the residents of Ely Hospital. With hindsight, I might have chosen to bridge the gap between the community and the institution where I was working in a different way. Going for the more personally rewarding projects where immediate, positive feedback was forthcoming was all too easy.

Therapists are paid for their expertise, understanding and skills. In the field of learning difficulties, this split between the knowingness of the therapist and the not-knowingness of the client is heightened and emphasised. The psychodynamic model can, I believe, reinforce this power structure. The therapist runs the risk of placing herself in a quasi-medical role where diagnosis (interpretation) and treatment (therapy) becomes hers to impart. My fear is that such models can put the onus on the therapist to know, to understand and to barter unconsciousness with consciousness.

Art therapists must be mindful of this fact when exploring means of communication and negotiation. A contract also has the effect of validating the work. The sessions matter, the venue matters, it matters whether someone turns up or not, the therapist matters, the carer matters and above all the client matters. This may seem obvious and fundamental, but apathy and disregard can be a cancer in services for people with learning difficulties, reducing everything to the lowest common denominator. I do not feel it is too dramatic to stress that there are powerful unconscious forces afoot which can undermine respect, confidence, hope and vitality.
